In Puzma, nobody has died for weeks, and the gravedigger is beginning to worry. His friend Korff has a different complaint: his wife still expects his company.
The solution seems simple. Korff hires a young man to keep Solikiana occupied while he retreats to the cemetery. Latif arrives carrying his belongings in a cardboard box and wearing a suit of armor. When Solikiana mistakes him for her husband, she believes the man she married has finally remembered how to be tender.
Korff is delighted with his purchase. But the arrangement begins to change everyone it touches. Solikiana discovers desires she had almost given up on. Latif becomes entangled in a deception he cannot easily undo. And in the cemetery, two old friends find that escaping the demands of life leaves them dangerously little to live for.
Funny, unsettling, and tender, Late Spring is a novel about marriage, loneliness, and the things people believe they can buy from one another. At its heart is a woman who was never consulted about an arrangement that changes her life, and who must decide what she wants once the helmet comes off.
